Roll three dice. What number is represented by the dice? Is there more than one possibility?

Describe the rules behind different interpretations for the numbers represented by three dice. What are the smallest and biggest number you can represent using a particular interpretations? Are the numbers in between the smallest and largest all representable in both interpretations?

Cups and pebbles

Similar to the dice exercise, try to devise different number representations for three cups and a pile pebbles. Again, describe the rules behind different interpretations for the numbers represented. What are the numbers you can represent?

In one of the interpretations it doesn’t make sense to use three cups. Why? How is this situation different from the three dice representation?
